sne research (hereinafter referred to as sne), a korean market research company, released the latest global power battery statistics on october 6. from january to august this year, the total installed capacity of global power batteries was 287.6 gwh, up 78.7% year on year, which has been growing for 26 consecutive months; ningde times, lg new energy and byd ranked in the top three. among them, the installed capacity of global power battery reached 45.7 gwh in august, with a year-on-year growth of more than 90%, creating a new high of the total installed capacity in a single month this year.
data shows that in the first eight months of 2022, the use of electric vehicle batteries in ningde times rose 114.7% year on year, reaching 102.2gwh, and its market share rose from 29.6% to 35.5%, ranking first.
in contrast, the market share of lg new energy, the leading lithium battery enterprise in south korea, decreased from 22.3% to 13.7%, and the combined market share of sk on, samsung sdi and lg new energy decreased from 33.5% to 25%. byd's battery usage for electric vehicles increased by more than 192% year on year.
in a single month, the installed capacity of ningde times reached 18gwh in august, ranking first in the world, with a year-on-year increase of more than 128%. its market share was 39.3%, 5.8 percentage points higher than that in july, a new high in the year.
byd also set a new record again, with its installed capacity rising to 6.5 gwh in august, ranking second with a market share of 14.3%, surpassing lg new energy for two consecutive months.
the list shows that in addition to ningde times and byd, there are four chinese enterprises in the top ten, namely china innovation airlines (no. 7), guoxuan hi tech (no. 8), xinwangda (no. 9) and honeycomb energy (no. 10), ranking from the seventh to the tenth.
it is worth noting that among the top ten power battery enterprises, the installed capacity of chinese enterprises grew by more than 100% year on year, with a market share of 64%, up two percentage points month on month. among them, xinwangda's installed capacity growth in august reached 413.7%. the market share of the three korean power battery enterprises fell to 20% from 22% in the previous month, and the gap between chinese and korean counterparts was further widened.
in addition, chinese companies are rapidly expanding their overseas business. for example, ningde times, whose main product is square battery, recently announced that its cylindrical battery will be supplied to bmw from 2025. at present, cylindrical battery is the main product of lg new energy, samsung sdi and panasonic.
it is reported that ningde times is currently building a factory with an annual output of 100gwh in hungary, with an investment of 7.3 billion euros. this is the second factory of ningde times in europe, second only to the german factory planned to be put into operation this year. the company is also considering building a third factory in europe to double its battery output.
